Dirk,

Interesting site and I applaud your attempts to turn kids away from gangs.  I know how dangerous they can be.
<>However, where my struggle with the death penalty comes is when it comes 20 years too late.  <>When gangs execute ‘justice’ between them, it is swift and quick, like shooting the intruder in your house there and then.   However, we have locked up a man for 20 years and now we wish to execute him?  Why?  What does bringing his death forward do to help anything? <>Victims are looking for justice?  Sure, well he has been deprived of freedom for 20 years and will continue to be for the rest of his life – so much so that he has had all the time in the world to reflect on what he has done.  He has no future in this world, with the exception of the route that he now uses to do good – why stop it?  Regardless of whether you think that merits anything, surely it is the ultimate that one would want as a victim – to see the perpetrator have a genuine change of heart through the justice system.   They want him dead?  Sure, well he’ll die soon enough anyway – we all will, then God will make his views known to Tookie one way or the other – I am no man to judge in place of God.

You don’t stop kids joining gangs or stop gang members from getting their bones by reminding them about capital punishment – their risks are far greater on the street.  The powerful work that Tookie offers is to change hearts and minds before that day comes – this is what will change America – don’t stop it
